GARDEN CITY – There were the vibrant colors of native dress -- Vietnam, the Philippines, Burma, Mexico, and others. There were the songs and prayers echoing the voices of those cultures throughout the church. And there was the varied ethnic cuisine at the reception (including some fine barbecued beef!).
All of these added up to a gathering 50 years in the making -- a celebration of the truly universal nature of the Church as exemplified in a 50-year-old parish that has long opened its doors to the world.
One week before the Most Rev. John B. Brungardt, Father Reggie Urban, pastor, and several priests of the diocese celebrated St. Dominic’s 50th anniversary Mass Oct. 25, parishioners of St. Dominic and the other Garden City parish, St. Mary, processed through the streets of Garden City.
“The event was designed to honor St. Mary Parish as the mother parish in Garden City,” explained Marjie Clarke of St. Dominic Parish. “The flame was carried by different members of St. Mary Parish until it was handed over to members of St. Dominic Parish at the corner of 3rd and Walnut, which was the division line established in 1965. ... It was re-lit for the 10:30 a.m. Mass, where it was carried into the church by some of the founding members of the St. Dominic Parish. Judy (Sullivan) Dohogne held the torch for the opening of Mass.”
One week later, on Oct. 25, the same torch was lit again and carried to the front of St. Dominic Church for the start of the anniversary Mass. Women and men in colorful traditional Vietnamese garb sang a lilting opening procession, and other choirs from different nationalities followed in turn.
During his homily, Bishop Brungardt welcomed the children to the front where they helped him teach a lesson about the formation of Church, and how we all are called to be missionaries of Christ.
After Mass, everyone gathered in the social hall for a dinner reception.
The highly impressive event displayed the hard work of a parish devoted to spreading the Gospel of Christ within and without of the church doors for the last 50 years, and for many years to come.
