LIBERAL – You first notice the scent of home-cooked cuisine (burritos de chili, menudo, tostadas, chili verde …) from several vendors.
Then there is the music – loud music – from live bands, echoing throughout the large event center. And in between the music there are talks, and skits, and presentations of scholarships.... This is the annual Fiesta de Colores, an event in which hundreds of Spanish-speaking Catholics (and anyone else who would like to attend) from across the diocese spend a day celebrating rich Hispanic culture amid a backdrop of their deep Catholic faith. This year, the Most Rev. John B. Brungardt was out of the state and unable to attend, and Father Jim Dieker celebrated Mass, assisted by deacons Ruben Sigala (who offered an impassioned homily), Apolonio Rodriguez, Victor Mencos, and Hector Rios, all of whom enjoyed greeting the many participants. The day-long celebration of music, food, dance and praise has taken place in the diocese for nearly four decades, and only in recent years has extended beyond the Ulysses Civic Center. A Fiesta de Colores still occurs in Ulysses. The introduction of the second, diocesan-wide Fiesta took place in Garden City last year. As in past years, organizers from both events welcome anyone from across the diocese to attend. Both are large, festive events celebrating Christ in the rich Hispanic heritage of southwest Kansas. This year’s Ulysses Fiesta takes place today, Sept. 20, beginning at Noon. A Mass will be celebrated at 5 p.m. Fiesta de Colores began as a reunion of sorts for those who first took part in Cursillo, a three-day conversion experience that still takes place throughout the year in the diocese. What began for just a small group of people, has, over time, blossomed into a diocesan-wide celebration that has at its heart the rich Catholic culture of Mexico and Central America. As has become the tradition, last year’s young king and queen of the fiesta passed on their crowns and robes to the new royalty. The fact that the royalty are always young children makes the event particularly fun to observe. Another important part of the event is the presentation of scholarships, and this year it included four recipients of $500. Supporting vocations is important to the Cursillo, as has been the case for the last few years, in which Deacon Juan Salas, seminarian for the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City, has been one of the scholarship recipients. This year, the other three recipients were Hispanic students who just graduated from high school and wish to continue their studies. They are Erick Moreno from Garden City, Rosa Murillo from Garden City, and Olivet Martinez from Dodge City. Just as at the recent Fiesta in Liberal, the Ulysses Fiesta includes home-cooked meals, the crowning of the young king and queen, as well as a 5 p.m. Mass. Coverage of the Ulysses Fiesta will be included in the next SKC. |
